ATHLETE OF THE MONTH
Luis Camps Abridged Bio
I have always been physically active. During my youth I played numerous sports including baseball, track, football, etc… Later I began to run short distances just to stay in shape and to help with my other sporting activities like snow skiing, Scuba and free diving, softball and others.

One day, about 30 some years ago, during one of my solitary runs I happened to converge into a bunch of runners going in my same direction. When I asked what was going on one of them told me that they were participating in a road race (a 10K I believe). After running with them for a while (as a bandit) I was hit by the bug and registered myself for the next local race. And the rest is history. In that first race I had so much fun that for a few years I would run practically all local 5Ks and 10Ks I could get myself into. In doing so I developed strong friendships with a lot of other runners.

After some time I decided to get more serious and started training for longer distances and when my 50th birthday came along I was ready for my first marathon. I completed the first of five New York City marathons and also completed marathons in Disney, Boston and Marine Corps, in Washington DC. But as we all very well know summers in Miami are hot and muggy making long training runs sometimes uncomfortable. After one of those long training runs a runner buddy mentioned that we should try triathlons because swimming and biking were part of the sport and that there were some of them in Miami. So I went out and bought a $75 bike and started training on it and about 25 years ago I completed my first spring triathlon in Key Biscayne. Now I was really hooked.

First thing I did was to go out and buy a better bike for the then astronomical sum of $450. By then I was competing in 7 or 8 triathlons a year ranging from sprint to international distances, usually appearing in the podium and doing well within my age group (depending on who showed up). After a few years of this, and with a lot better bike, I was ready for my first long course Ironman. I completed Ironman Florida in 2002 and in 2005 completed de Ironman World Championship in Kona, Hawaii. I also completed the Disney Ironman 70.3 a couple of times. I am not done yet as there are other Ironman distance races in my future.

I have been a member of the South Florida Triathletes Club since its inception in early 1999 and presently as a member of the board of directors.
