Tip of the Week
Nutrition III

Nutrition
and Gastric problems are usually the cause of poor performances and
DNFs (did not finish) in triathlon, especially in Half-Ironman and Full
Ironman distance races. Your stomach can "shut down" during the race
for the following reasons: -Eating too much and/or too fast before and
during the race -Not eating/drinking enough -Taking more calories than
the body can absorb per hour (usually when exercising, the body can
only absorb around 60% to 65% of the calories burned) -Too much solid
food. Ideally during the race stick with a "liquid" diet (getting most
of the calories from energy drinks/gels) -Not alternating enough water
with the energy drinks and/or gels -Becoming hyponatremic (low blood
sodium level) caused by drinking too much water. This is the opposite
of Dehydration. Experiment with different energy drinks, gels, bars
during training, and once you find what works for you stick with it on
race day.

Never
try something new on race day. Try to find out what the race organizers
will have at the stations during the race and experiment with the same
"food" during training. This way you will find the food you've train
with at the race and won't have to carry too much with you.

August - Rajesh Durbal

Rajesh knows what it is like to be challenged. He was born without legs and only one arm…As a young boy growing up he was constantly teased and ridiculed: an outcast amongst his own peers.
As a result he tried to hide himself in baggy loose fitted clothing in the hopes to blend in.
The pressure was so great that Rajesh remembers being suicidal.
At the age of 12, Rajesh found the athlete that was waiting to emerge. He became involved with downhill slalom skiing and started his journey into finding himself: the real person that was inside the body…

Rajesh will be in South Carolina doing a 70.3. end of August and then in Hawaii finishing off his training for his biggest goal this year, Ford Ironman World Championship.
